How to Host a Secret Santa Gift Exchange (Step by Step)

Secret Santa falls apart for the same reasons every year: nobody knows what to buy, somebody draws their own name, and one person forgets. Five steps fix all of that.

1. Set the rules up front

Pick a spend limit ($20–$30 works for most offices), an exchange date and a deadline to draw names. Put it on a sign so nobody can say they didn't know.

2. Collect a questionnaire from everyone

Favorite color, snack, coffee order, hobbies and a "please, no" line. It turns guessing into thoughtful gifts.

3. Draw names

Use printed slips in a hat. If someone draws their own name, everyone puts theirs back and draws again.

4. Track who has who

The organizer keeps one sheet: who drew whom, whether the gift is bought, and whether it was delivered.

5. Make the reveal a game

Before opening, everyone writes down who they think their Secret Santa is and why. Read them out loud at the end.
